Day 3 -- Confidence & Self-esteem
Group 1 Regina Tsang 3A (24)
After the breakfast, we walked for about 20 minutes to have our first swimming lesson in the Thompson Rec Centre. Thompson Rec Centre is a recreational centre in the main campus where various sports facilities are located. At the beginning of the lesson, we all went through a swimming test to ensure safety.
The theme of today is "confidence" and "self-esteem". Confidence means a firm trust. It is the feeling or behaviour that one can rely on someone or something. We learnt that people are not born to be confident but develop confidence during their growth. Following is "self-esteem", which is confidence in one's own work or abilities, and the self-respect one has on him or herself.
After having lunch, we welcomed three special guests to share their opinion on confidence and ways to build confidence. We should trust and respect ourselves. We can gain confidence from every single incident we experienced. Then we made a photo frame for our roommate as to discover one's abilities and strengths. We wrote different positive and sweet adjectives to describe and encourage our roommates.
Lastly we went shopping in the Masonville Mall, my group bought loads of snacks and body wash from the mall. Such a nice experience! We all are looking forward to the amazing activities in the coming days.
Group 2 Katelyn Chu 3A (5)
We started our day with a morning swim. Despite the freezing water, we still had loads of fun playing games in the pool. The swimming section turned out to be unexpectedly fun for everyone and we are all looking forward to the morning swim next week! After lunch, we attended a talk about confidence. One guest said that to respect our soul, it was okay to say no to requests or things that we weren't comfortable with. It was a really remarkable line for me. I also enjoy the craft-making section today. We made picture frames and we were all creative with our work. It was really nice to see everyone putting effort in their works. We went shopping after dinner. The clothes were so pretty there. Overall, we had a tiring but productive day.
Group 3 Nicole Lee 3U (17)
Out of all activities today, what impresses me the most is the “confidence panel”. We had three special guests sharing their stories on how to embrace confidence and why we should do so. I thought it was truly inspiring as it taught me something more than just the definition of “confidence”. They made me realise that “confidence” is not about being sociable and bubbly but it is about believing in ourselves and respecting our body, mind and soul. I also find our first swimming lesson here valuable. One thing that I can improve on is to not complain about spending only a little time in this activity but enjoy every moment having fun with the counsellors and classmates instead.
Group 4 Suki Chung 3T (6)
Today is the third day of the Brescia tour. Though the swimming lesson was great, what we enjoyed the most and was able to get the most out of was the sharing of special guests on self-esteem. Through their sharing, we had a clearer understanding of the connection between self-concept and self confidence. Hence, we also know how to build up our self-confidence. We understood that we should not have either high or low self-esteem because it affects us in communicating with others and in improving ourselves. I also learnt that confidence is an important aspect of being a successful leader because one has to be confident in oneself such that other members can aptly and comfortably cooperate with the leader.
Group 5 Kristie Yan 3U (34)
The theme of today is “confidence and self-esteem”. The most impressive part of the day is that we heard three guests sharing about their experience on how to be confident. We learnt that that everyone is unique and wonderfully made. In the morning we had our swim at Thompson center. We were quite shocked when we learnt that we had to do a swimming test but fortunately it went smoothly. In the afternoon, we made picture frames with encouraging quotes on them and we exchanged our frames with each other. We learnt that it is very important for us to build up confidence. In the evening we went to the shopping mall, and we almost got lost as it was as big as a maze.
Group 6 Moreen Ho 3P(13)
Today was our third day in Brescia. In the morning, we went swimming with the counsellors and had great fun. We played some ball games in the pool and people were splashing around. For those who could not swim, they just sat next to the pool and watched. Afterwards, there was a lesson about confidence and self esteem, shedding us some light on the subject.
After lunch, we had the ‘Confidence Panel’. There were three special guests, and they were invited to share some of their experiences with us, helping us delving deeper into the true meaning confidence and self-esteem. One of the guests was a foreigner and she had faced adversities in the cultural barriers in Canada, which was relatable to us. Then, we had our craft session, which was about making a photo frame with decorations of positive meaning and giving it to our friends.
Last but not least, we had ‘Pamper Night’ at about 7:30 pm. We enjoyed making masks (and putting them on), and some of us were helping each other to paint their fingernails. It was a great way to end the day!
Group 7 3S Peony Woo (35)
On the third day of our leadership program, we learnt about confidence and self esteem. The former refers to the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something whereas the latter being the confidence in one's own worth or abilities. Confidence is an essential element of great leadership. We need to believe in ourselves in order to persuade others to believe in us. The most impressive part of today's program is the confidence panel. The personal experience of the three guest speakers inspired me a lot and helped me rethink my life. Although they faced obstacles in their lives, they stepped out of their comfort zone and embraced their challenges. They experienced and learnt from their failures. Failure makes us grow. Therefore, I will try to be more confident because everyone is special. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. We have to maintain our strengths and overcome our weaknesses. We should never stop trying until we are proud!
Group 8 Trinity Kam 3S (12)
On the third day of the leadership program, we had our first swimming session in the morning. We played the beach ball game and it was exciting. Although we also had a swimming test, it is really different from the swimming lesson in our school. After lunch, we had three guests coming to Brescia University College to give us a one-hour talk about confidence and how they gain confidence in their lives. We learnt a lot about confidence, which we need in our lives. We also decorated our own photo frames using our creativity. They are beautiful and we took a group photo with our counsellor, Leora. We taught Leora how to count numbers in Cantonese after the craft session as well!
Group 9 Natalie Chan 3U (2)
Today, during the enjoyable swim at Thompson Rec Centre, we played some team-building games with the counselors. We developed a stronger bonding with other groups and counselors through the game!
The most memorable event of the day was the inspiring talk of the special guests. They shared their experience on building confidence and self-esteem. We learnt that confidence is vital for good leadership, and how it can be developed through trial and error. We also realised the importance of taking care of our mind, body and soul, with ways such as exercising and providing ourselves with affirmation to build a strong foundation for our confidence. We understood new ways to become resilient, and to accept failure, since it paves the way to success.
The arts and craft session of making the picture frame allowed us to recognise the good traits of our groupmates and exchange words of motivation.
We have already grasped numerous important qualities of being a good leader just in these couple of days. We cannot wait to learn more in the following days!
Group10 Carmen Lam 3P (16)
We went swimming at the start of the day. It was pretty tiring but we had a lot of fun. After the swimming session, there was a lesson on self-esteem, we learnt how to define confidence and self-esteem and respect ourselves, as we all deserve to be respected. The theme of today is Confidence and Self-esteem. There were a few activities to help us understand more about confidence and find ways to boost our confidence, which will lead to a better self-esteem. We also listened to a talk about how others build up their confidence and overcome problems. Last but not least, we made a photo frame, which our friends decorated with encouraging words.
We realise the importance of confidence and self-esteem in great leadership and life. We have also increased our confidence and we will to apply what we have learnt in the lectures and talks to our lives.
